Third Permanent Test Drive Meme

Welcome to the SoE TDM!

Due to the premise of the game, everyone on this testdrive must be the modern day reincarnation of the characters we all know and love. Please take a quick look at our navigation to familiarize yourself with the concept and setting of the game before you jump in.

If you have a relationship plotting post comment for your character (which is NOT mandatory to play in this tdm), please link to it when putting up a toplevel on the TDM. That way, other players can easily get an idea of what kind of character they will be tagging.

Other than that, you know the tdm drill - when commenting, please put your character's name and canon in the subject line, and write one or more threadstarters so others can tag you easily. Below, you'll find some prompts that you can use or discard at will to write those threadstarters.

1. The mighty cat spawn

One of your fellow Numbered echoed the ability to spawn cats. They don't know how or why, and they have very little control over it. The problem is that all those cats are a little magic, and all of them like to escape directly after they spawned. So all Numbered have been recruited to find the cats and bring them back to their home.

Find a cat and bring it home really sounds a lot easier than it is... At least they are easily recognisable by the little gemstones set into their foreheads.

2. Winter Wonderland

This far to the south, in the very maritime climate of England, there rarely is snow. And if, it isn't much, and it doesn't stick for long. Not so this Christmas. Snow as thick as on Christmas postcards covers Mossgate Council. Public transport has shut down, the roads are impossible to drive on, stores have closed down, and electricity is down in many places.

In Folkton and Moss Manor, the church halls are heated and offer mingling spaces. In Mossgate, people go sledding on the Greens. And in Tarwich, whole roads are covered in giant snowmen. All corners of the council area are in a special state of existence, and to be missing it, you'd have to be in deep hibernation.

3. Halloween is a bit extra this year

As in, very extra. Not only does every household wake up to a bucket of water on their doorsteps in which scary apples are floating, complete with a sign attacked to the bucket that reads: Have fun bobbing!

No, the whole of the council area is also covered in cobwebs, and the graveyards are covered with the skeletons of those that should normally lie buried under their soil.

4. Summer summer SUMMER!

There is a summer fĂȘte and a Pride to enjoy during the summer months. But one can also just lie at the beach, wade through the rock pools at the bottom of the cliffs to catch starfish, tiny shrimp, tiny fish, shellfish, and anemones. Or you can take a ride on one of the attractions on the Pleasure Pier. Or enjoy a concert on the greens. ...Or return from a trip to Spain and suddenly have all echoes come back to one at once. That's also an option, but probably less pleasurable.

5. Past tdm prompts

Feel free to use a prompt from an earlier tdm!

6. Wildcard

And, of course, the obligatory do-what-you-want option.

Plotting post here

1. Cats
Thom usually liked cats. He didn't have one of his own, but he always liked taking care of them when he was volunteering at the shelter.

But catching them outside was a lot harder than he thought it would be. He'd gotten a few into the carrier by bribing them with food, but now he was looking up at one that had managed to get stuck on a tree branch above him.

Carefully, he starts climbing up the tree after it.

2. Winter Wonderland
Thom kneels down in the snow at the top of the hill and grins as he looks over at his dog.

"What do you think, boy? Do you want to try sledding?"

3. Wildcard
iamnotgod: A man, holding a folder in one hand and gesturing with the other, looking off to the right. (And WHAT Is This?)

CAAATS.

[personal profile] iamnotgod 2019-02-22 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Walter just happens to be on the scene; at least there's no way people can find this suspicious?

"You'd better hope that cat likes you; there's more than one way to get a scratch on your face here," he comments, checking his pockets because he knows he has some food on him...

There's more than one way to bring a cat back to earth, natch.
dreamtamer: (are you sure about that?)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-23 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thom startles at suddenly hearing Walter's voice, and loses his grip on the tree. Fortunately, he hadn't made it very far up the tree yet and doesn't have far to fall.
iamnotgod: Shade Over Face (What Did You Do To Me?)

[personal profile] iamnotgod 2019-02-23 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Walter is quick to catch him, all the same; hand moves away from his pocket, and both are raised for maximum safety.

He kneels as well, to lessen the compression - even with as little as Thom has to fall, it'd be terrible for the boy to gain a neck sprain or the like for his trouble.

"You all right?" Walter asks, putting the boy down on his own two feet.

"Apologies for startling you, there."
dreamtamer: (Question)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-23 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Thom blinks in surprise as he realizes that the fall hadn't hurt nearly as much as he'd expected. He stares up at Walter.

"I'm okay! Thanks for catching me." He stares back up at the tree, and sighs as he realizes that the cat is now even higher than before. "But I don't know how I'm going to get him down."

"No problem," Walter replies, turning to stare at the cat as well.

Faintly, it blinks back.

"I wouldn't recommend waiting this one out, but we could try luring it out instead," he continued, finally locating the food he'd been thinking of and holding it up toward the tree.

"Can't really get the wind to aid us, but as long as our feline friend can see the food, this might still work."

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-24 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
"But I tried food already," Thom points out. He looks back up at the cat and frowns worriedly. "Do you think its hurt? What if that's the reason it can't come down? And if it won't come down, what if it gets worse?"
iamnotgod: Black and white picture of a man looking up and off to the right. (What Even Is This?)

Up to you whether the cat is injured and just downplaying it, or what.

[personal profile] iamnotgod 2019-02-24 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh."

Well, that just made things harder all over again.

"In these circumstances, most cats are just stubborn, and maybe a little scared."

Above them, the cat... yawned?

Walter made a face.

"I don't think this one is scared, anyway."
dreamtamer: (we can do it!)

The cat is probably fine! Thom is just a worrier. With an overactive imagination.

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-24 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Thom stares up at it again.

"Then I'm going to try and get up there again," he decides. "It can't stay up there by itself. And it could be hurt if it tries to jumps down from there."

It doesn't occur to him that if the cat could get hurt from falling from there, the same would be more than true for his own self.
iamnotgod: A man staring slightly off-center, looking serious. (Let Me Explain You A Thing)

Very relatable, for what it's worth. KITTEH. ;a;

[personal profile] iamnotgod 2019-02-24 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thom..." Walter says, almost willing to let the pause speak for itself.

"You do weigh more than the cat, yes? Cats are also more used to jumping off high objects - though that doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything," he acknowledges.
dreamtamer: (tired glance)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-24 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The boy blinks as he realizes what the problem was, and his expression falls. "I didn't think about that." He looks back up at the branches. "I don't weight a lot, though. Maybe it would still be okay? Or I could get a ladder."
iamnotgod: A man, sitting and possibly smiling. (Awkward Smile)

[personal profile] iamnotgod 2019-02-24 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll be a ladder for now, how's that?" Walter offers.

It could work as a compromise...
dreamtamer: (do you remember)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-24 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Really? You're sure about that?"
iamnotgod: A man, smiling and holding a book. (When He Smiles.)

How tall IS this tree? XD Walter's only 5'3, but that's taller than Thom is.

[personal profile] iamnotgod 2019-02-24 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"I mean it."

Nodding, he moves closer to the tree, crouching down for Thom to step into his hands.
dreamtamer: (pic#7374767)

Lets say just tall enough for Thom to reach the cat if Walter gives him a boost, and he stretches

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-24 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thom steps into Walter's hands and grabs onto his shoulder to keep his balance.
iamnotgod: A man staring up and off to the right. (And He Asks Why.)

Then both shall stretch!

[personal profile] iamnotgod 2019-02-24 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Up we go, now!"

That's all the warning - plus two seconds - Thom gets, before Walter lifts the boy upward, adjusting his own stance for stability and so Thom can best face the kitty.
dreamtamer: (Default)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-24 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thom holds on to to Walter's shoulder as he boosts him up,then carefully balances and stretches up just a little further.

He murmurs quietly to the cat, as he tries to get closer to it without scaring it. Leaning just a little further, he finally stretches far enough to grab it and pull it back.

Which is when the cat reacts as you might expect. Thom yelps as the cat's claws sink into his arms, but hangs on to it.
iamnotgod: A man, holding a folder in one hand and gesturing with the other, looking off to the right. (And WHAT Is This?)

[personal profile] iamnotgod 2019-02-24 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Walter visibly winces when the cat makes its mood clear - but he doesn't let go of Thom, and mostly internalizes his reaction.

"Going to need to get that looked at. All right, back down!" he warns, putting Thom down as carefully as the boy had been lifted.

Let it be known that Walter Weekes' preferred sport is not weightlifting.
dreamtamer: (biggest dreamer)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Thom keeps his hold on the cat as he is placed back on the ground, and then quickly runs over to place the cat in the carrier.

It is only after the case is securely locked that he gingerly inspects on the scratches on his arms.

"I guess he got me a little," he says mournfully.

What's the kid doing climbing up that tree? It's not that Anders would want to get him down from there or anything. Tree climbing is great! Kids should be up trees all the time in his opinion. And swimming in the sea. And running parkour. Great fun!

It's just that he's curious, and also happy to cheer the kid on if his courage falters. So he wanders over and watches - and also gives the tree a quick glance to judge if he, Anders, would be too heavy to climb up there, too.

"What're you doing climbing up there?" He has a distinct accent - perfectly understandable, flawless English, but there's a bit of a potato quality to it that however doesn't stand out as much in Kentish as it might in more northern areas.
dreamtamer: (concern)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-24 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Thom pulls himself up onto a branch that was just strong enough to support his weight. Although it does creak a little.

"There's a cat up here," he calls down. "It wouldn't come down by itself."
chatty_swan: (brohugs)

[personal profile] chatty_swan 2019-02-27 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Shall I come up and help?" He's bouncing on his heels, ready to jump, grab a lower branch, and start to pull himself up.

"Or I can catch ya two when ya got her and wanna jump."
dreamtamer: (laugh)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-02-28 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
"Um, you might be too heavy for these branches?" Thom could already hear them creaking with just his weight.

"Could you just take her if I hand her down?" He didn't think jumping while holding a cat would go very well either.
chatty_swan: (brohugs)

[personal profile] chatty_swan 2019-03-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can do that too for sure. But it's less fun, isn't it?"

Still, he remains on the ground. He doesn't actually want to break the tree that holds kid and cat.

"So, do you know that cat at all?"
dreamtamer: (into the fight)

[personal profile] dreamtamer 2019-03-08 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Not at all," he says cheerfully. "But it's lost and it must be lonely, don't you think?"

He tests the branches, and pulls himself up to one that feels a little more sturdy.
