PLOT DIGEST AND SETTING INTERACTIONS POST

Plotting posts are here to

serve as monthly digests, to get everyone back up to speed with what is going on in the game by providing up-to-date information on plot and setting
provide a space to ask questions about interactions with the setting and plot
offer a venue where players can plot with the mods so that together we can make Save Our Earth as interactive as possible. Plot that has not yet happened is malleable; if player characters interact with it, it may just steer in a different direction from what the mods expected.

Please direct all questions, suggestions and anything else addressed to the mods to toplevel titled "Talk to a Mod" and not to the post in general.

The post is also open for players to plot and coordinate between one another.

General/OOC notes:

Please remember to add your character tag to posts that you are tagging into!
For the sake of simplicity, this game uses UTC for everything where an exact cut-off (or start) time is relevant. Right now, this is mostly relevant for AC.
A note on NPCs and plot: Currently we're in a phase of settling into the setting. That means that NPCs don't offer plot hooks yet, but relationship hooks - it's meant to allow characters to establish relationships with them or players to get a feeling for them before they need access to them. For example Stewart will in the future more easily talk to people who helped him find his son, things like that. Likewise there will be no plot directly barrelling at anyone yet, though it is there in the background, so when it shows up more clearly, it will hopefully not feel like a foreign object in the setting and characters will already have some way of relating to it.

Events that occurred recently or are occurring currently:

On June 30th, the network went live(x), and was accidentally first put to use by Jacob Petty (brofistsforall) (x), while Sam Stone (scarsolderthanyou) was the first to access it on purpose (x).
The night of the Northern Lights, Walter Weekes (iamnotgod) and James Pike (tobodlygo) helped Stewart Fairhurts track down his wayward son (x).
Not long after, Sam Stone (scarsolderthanyou) and Walter Weekes (iamnotgod) tried to figure out the echo boundaries (x).
On July 25th, Chad (channingchanningchanning) alerted everyone on the network (x) to an outbreak at the Moss Manor Menagerie's petting zoo, which caused almost every Numbered person to be in the same location for the first time as they tried to help out, each according to their own capabilities (x). In the process, James Pike (tobodlygo) failed to steal a rabbit and was later sentenced to community service at the zoo (x).

Events (potentially) occurring in the immediate future:

Pride pride PRIDE!

Due to it being the southern LGBTQ+ community's "retirement village" and there thus being a strong LGBTQ+ infrastructure in the town, this is a huge event that almost all stores, institutions and other parts of the community take part in one way or the other. Players are encouraged to make up a way in which their characters' school/workplace/social organisation offers events or otherwise gets involved in Pride Week, and respond here with whatever it is so you can get some plotting going, with the mods and with each other!

Also, yes, Pride is a bit late this year, taking place at the end of August - due to the extreme heat, it has been delayed in hopes of weather that will make less event attendees collapse.
The weekend before Pride Week, so in the first half of August, there also will be a Summer Fête, organised by the local religious communities, including a Victoria Sponge Cake baking competition, a raffle, activities like tug-o-war, and stalls with vendors selling local crafts and goods.
There will be a guided tour through the tunnels under the cliffs between the Fête and Pride Week.

Is your character's school/workplace/social organisation having an event or otherwise getting involved with Pride Week/the parade, or are they otherwise involved?

Please tell us here what they're doing! A rough idea or a detailed description are both good - getting started on plotting Pride Week shenanigans here is just as good as delivering finished products.

Since, while he's not part of a particular organization, he WILL be at Pride. If your character needs him to help with something, he'll do whatever he can to help out with it!

Also okay with him getting both dragged into and "dragged into" all sorts of shenanigans. X) This applies to the Summer Fête, as well, though he'll be more polite/less enthusiastic (if in his own introverted way) about it.

... And while I'm tempted to have him eat the cake, I might just go with a memory Echo from getting into a very nasty argument with a non-tolerant person at the parade. 8')

ETA: New plan is that he'll get the Echo in question from being dared to eat the cake. This will probably make him not want to eat the cake, so. 8'D

In approximate order:

Russell's birthday was July 30th! I'll be putting up a backdated network post of him drawing a birthday cake in a bit. Not exactly sure when, but once I've gotten some petting zoo threads closer to him learning that some people he knows are also perceiving the network.

Summer Fête is another of those things where you just have to go, the community-minded people in your extended family / network will frown at you all disapprovingly if you don't, so Russell's going. This one's fun, anyway, between the games and food.
....He really likes cake, though, so the warning against The Cake better have more detail than "you have been warned" going for it, or... he's gonna make mistakes.

Sometime this month there's going to be a collective of nerds going around to play on arcade machines and leave terrible names for the high scores, and he's going to be part of it.

If, by the next guided tour of the tunnels, anybody on the network has been talking about strange things they've started imagining or remembering, he may ask people to go down there with him and see if they get the same weird feelings from it.

He'll be a participant at Pride, for sure.
And the souvenir shop he (currently) works at on the pier is stocking up on rainbow stuff. I'm not sure yet if they're getting involved in Pride Week, but if they are I'll add it to the Pride Week thread.

Walter definitely got Russell something for his birthday. I'm... not quite sure just what, yet, but he would have. >.>

Sounds good! I honestly don't yet know what he did with his birthday, but tbd soon.

I've found I get weirdly stressed out trying to decide what my characters get others as gifts, even when there's a specific list to choose from... So, please don't stress on it. If you get an idea, go for it, but if not ,we can always roll a d20 in plurk and handwave it with high score = a gift Russell loves, low score = not so much.

I am 100% all for the dice-rolling idea on plurk. :> We can do it when I log in there tomorrow. Sound good?

It's a plan!

I was thinking that it was likely that the local RSPCA branch would be out and about with stands/events etc at Pride (in a similar manner to what they do at Brighton Pride) and as Sadie volunteers there she would probably be involved in their stand/"come look at these cute animals you can adopt" for at least part of Pride

Since some of our characters have very drastic physical changes that they may go through, how does social media/texting/etc handle this?

For example, Takamasa still has his assistant living back in Japan and they text often. Once he gets all of his tattoos back he'll of course be sending her a picture of them all like "what the heck lol" - how will these images translate once they reach her over in Japan? Or if he posts a picture to his social media, how will his fans outside of Mossgate see the image?

Chi would be happy to help out with this and would drag some of the others from the LGBTQ club at uni to help out with this stand!

Sadie and Ben had been discussing prior to the aurora about going on a tunnel tour. I have an Echo I want for Sadie related to the tunnels.

If they're already planning to go, he'd happily go too, and ask them both if they suddenly remember anything weird. And get really vindicated when Sadie remembers something, even if it's not the same sort of thing he remembered.

...Would it be too mean for Russell to make a joke that he should go along with them, so Ben doesn't decide he needs to live in the caves now?

Sadie's Echo from the caves is hopefully going to be an object but they can certainly all be baffled as to how a giant notebook suddenly materialises in her rucksack.

Also, Russell should 100% make that joke.

Chi will be at pride (of course) - she will work with Sadie at the RSPCA booth for a while and will not attempt to steal any of the animals (lookin' at you Jim). When not at the booth she will be going in directions and doing stuff and things - I've clearly put a lot of thought into it, haha.

I personally don't actually know what Fete is, but it sounds really fun. She will likely not participate that much in any events but will definitely check out the vendors and more or less just have it as an excuse to be out and about.

You can bet yourself that Chi is gonna go down into those tunnels for a guided tour - she loves to go on them and goes every time. If anyone plans on attempting to ditch the tour to explore Chi will be vehemently against this. She would even consider telling the tour guide, though she could be talked into being hush hush.

It should be noted Chi is going to eat so much cake. If Jim tries to steal the cake, then she will probably help him because he is a Bad Influence (and he promised to share the cake with her).

I'm not sure if that'll be vindication or just baffledment, but there will definitely be some kind of feeling.

Oh no, enabled - he probably will.

As long as something can be recorded with conventional means, the recording can leave the boundary intact.

So while the tattoos and any memory of having ever had them would vanish if Takamasa leaves the echo boundary, recordings of them done by conventional means would still exist. So if he posts a picture, his fans will see the tattoo as-is, as will his assistant if he sends her one. (Aka he would have a weird case of amnesia + ninja tattoo removal???? Or that's what it would seem like to him.)

In this context, just to be safe, I'd like to point to the FOLLOW THE GAME DIRECTIVES - rule for Season One. Takamasa can have weird and awkward and frightening moments due to vanishing and reappearing tats, but please plot them in a way that doesn't lead to him successfully revealing the existence of the numbered to the public.

Benjiro will be at Pride to be supportive of family and friends. Not sure how he’ll help yet. Maybe something from 6th form college.

His aunt Rosemary is going to enter the baking competition at the Summer Fete, and he’ll be there for fun.

At some point in the month, he’s a part of the band wrecking high scores of all the arcade cabinets around town.

Definitely going to tour the tunnels with Sadie and Russell. Memory Echo maybe?

And Walter will definitely be along on the arcade binge! He will be contributing to the coin supply.

Not sure if I'll have him go on the tour or not, but there's no real way to get him an Echo out of it that I can think of. |D

I was considering giving Sadie a memory echo for the tunnels but why should I make it easy for her? Instead, she gets to decode a massive field notebook,

I think the tunnel group of Sadie, Ben, and Russell plans to behave on the tour, for all that Russell's going to make jokes at his distant cousin implying otherwise.

If Chi ends up part of operation Steal The Cake, Russell isn't getting involved - but he will cheer for their success on Rosemary's part.

See, memories of traveling through underground tunnels like that's just an everyday thing, that's the kind of memory Russell's talking about. Exactly as expected. They're all going to be much more confused by the sudden notebook. (Would it likely have suspicious strings of numbers in it, for them to get caught on as a red herring?)

It's going to be the notebook that Q'uila used to put down all of her field notes for the Miners Guild in, so not only will there be 'random' strings of numbers from various measurements but it'll be written in Eorzean script with maybe a bit of Doman (Fantasy Chinese/Japanese) in it too for added confusion.

I approve wholeheartedly, the characters could conclude that the notebook's full of hints of what's going on with the network and come to all sorts of wrong conclusions in the process.

Exactly, need to apply for the Echo but it has serious potential for shenanigans. Especially once they realise that Eorzean script is heavily, heavily stylised English :P
